What does this passage mean?

The background of the fourteenth chapter of Xian Jin is this. When the people of Lu were about to rebuild the treasury called the Long Storehouse, Min Ziqian suggested leaving the old one as it was. Hearing this, Confucius praised him: that man says little, but when he speaks he is sure to hit the mark. Min Ziqian was a disciple famous for filial devotion and was a man of few words. The phrase ‘hit the mark’ means striking the heart of the matter as an arrow strikes a target. Confucius valued the person who says exactly the right thing at exactly the right moment above the person who talks a great deal.

How can we apply it today?

The person who speaks most in a meeting is not the person who is most right. More often, the one who listens quietly and then pinpoints the issue in a single sentence changes the direction of the meeting. Min Ziqian’s words were few, but none were wasted. The value of speech lies in accuracy, not frequency. Training oneself to speak less is also training oneself to listen. Words spoken after listening fully and thinking fully carry weight even when short. Rather than adding words for the sake of presence, the person who waits for the necessary moment and says one precise thing earns trust in the end.

Questions to reflect on

  • ·Do you pay more attention to how often you speak or to how accurately you speak?
  • ·Have you recently seen someone hit the mark in a single sentence?
  • ·What would change if you said less and listened more?
