What does this passage mean?

In the eleventh chapter of Zi Han, Yan Yuan recalls how his teacher taught. The phrase rendered ‘step by step’ describes advancing in due order, and the verb means to guide. Confucius neither pushed his disciples nor overwhelmed them all at once; he led them by stages. His method was to broaden with culture and restrain with ritual: he widened Yan Yuan’s horizons with the literature of the Songs, the Documents, ritual, and music, and had him discipline his conduct by ritual propriety. Broadening and restraint, knowledge and self-control, went together. That is why Yan Yuan said he could not stop even when he wished to. A good teacher makes it impossible for the learner to stop.

How can we apply it today?

For anyone in a position to teach, this passage offers concrete guidance. Do not pour everything out at once; lead in order, at the learner’s pace. Do not merely fill people with knowledge; teach them how to use it with restraint in their lives. This applies to the senior training a new hire, the parent teaching a child, and the leader guiding a team. The proof of good teaching is that the learner wants to continue on their own, not under compulsion. A skilled guide neither pushes nor pulls. They make you want to take the next step.

Questions to reflect on

  • ·Was there a teacher who led you forward step by step?
  • ·When you teach someone, do you consider order and pace?
  • ·Do you have a way of making learners want to continue on their own?
