What does this passage mean?
In the fifteenth chapter of Li Ren, Confucius tells Zengzi that his Way is threaded through by a single principle, and Zengzi simply answers yes. After the Master leaves, the other disciples ask what was meant, and Zengzi replies with this line: the Master’s Way is nothing but wholehearted sincerity and reciprocity. The first is giving one’s whole heart, being true to oneself; the second is extending one’s own heart to understand others. Being sincere within and treating others as oneself without: these two, Zengzi says, are the thread running through all of the Master’s teaching. The passage is regarded as the most concise summary in the Analects of how to practice humaneness.
How can we apply it today?
There is no need to memorize a complex code of ethics. Zengzi’s summary reduces to two questions. Am I giving my whole heart to what I am doing right now? And am I doing to others what I would not want done to me? Passing work along carelessly is a failure of sincerity; speaking to a subordinate in a tone that would anger you is a failure of reciprocity. The more rules there are, the harder they are to keep, but these two apply in every situation. The path to becoming a good person is simpler than it seems. The difficulty lies only in practicing it every day.
Questions to reflect on
- ·What did you do with your whole heart today?
- ·Are you unthinkingly doing to others what you yourself dislike?
- ·If one principle ran through your whole life, what would it be?
