What does this passage mean?

In the eighth chapter of Ba Yi, Zixia asks about a verse from the Book of Songs: a charming smile, lovely eyes, and plain silk made brilliant. Confucius explains it with this line: the painting comes after the plain ground. Zixia then asks whether ritual likewise comes afterward, and Confucius, delighted, says that Zixia is the one who awakens him and that they can now discuss the Songs together. The plain ground is the sincere and trustworthy heart; ritual is the color applied on top of it. Substance comes first, and refinement follows.

How can we apply it today?

Fine clothes, polished speech, and refined manners are the colors. Without the plain ground beneath them, the sincere heart and the fundamentals, the colors only look awkward. A person who has practiced presentation skills without competence, or manners without sincerity, is soon found out. The line can also be read as advice to build the product and the character before investing in branding and image. When the order is reversed, effort turns into waste. Ornament shines only when there is a ground to hold it.

Questions to reflect on

  • ·Are you working on the colors right now, or on the ground?
  • ·Have you ever polished your appearance while postponing skill or sincerity?
  • ·What in your life corresponds to the plain white ground?
