What does this passage mean?

In the Tai Bo chapter, Confucius explains his philosophy of public engagement and withdrawal. 天下有道 describes a world governed by justice and order, while 無道 describes one ruled by disorder and injustice. 見 means appearing—entering the world and taking action—while 隱 means concealing oneself by withdrawing into seclusion. Confucius teaches us to participate actively when the world is upright and preserve ourselves through withdrawal when it is corrupt. This is situational wisdom, neither unconditional activism nor unconditional retreat.

How can we apply it today?

Resigning in order to preserve one's conscience within an unjust organization, or choosing silence under an unrighteous regime—decisions of this kind are still demanded today. Stepping forward when it is time to act and withdrawing when it is time to leave is courage, not cowardice. We need not fight in every circumstance, but Confucius warns against silence when action is possible. What matters is whether our standard for acting is self-interest or the Way.

Questions to reflect on

  • ·Do I distinguish the time to step forward from the time to withdraw?
  • ·If I have remained silent in an unjust situation, why?
  • ·What standards govern my decisions to engage or withdraw?
