What does this passage mean?

This passage from Wei Zheng expresses the ideal of government through virtue in a beautiful image. The North Star stays fixed at the center of the sky while the other stars circle around it. In the same way, people naturally follow a virtuous leader without coercion. Confucius regarded transformation through virtue, rather than rule by law and punishment alone, as the ideal form of government.

How can we apply it today?

Coercive leadership can work briefly but creates resistance over time. Under a leader who respects people and models the right conduct, an organization moves voluntarily. In a home, school, or society, true authority comes from respect rather than threat. The highest leadership inspires people to follow of their own accord.

Questions to reflect on

  • ·What was the best leader you have experienced like?
  • ·Which do you consider more effective, coercion or moral influence?
  • ·How do you influence the people around you?
