What does this passage mean?

The first chapter of Yao Yue opens with the words of the sage king Yao as he handed the throne to Shun. The succession of Heaven rests upon you, he says; sincerely hold to the middle, for if all within the four seas fall into want, Heaven’s blessing will end forever. ‘Sincerely hold to the middle’ means to keep to the mean without leaning to either side, and the text records that Shun later passed the same words to Yu. It is striking that what was said at the weightiest moment, the handing over of a throne, was not a dazzling technique of rule but ‘hold to the middle.’ And the warning that Heaven’s gift ends when the people fall into want is the core of Confucian political thought: the ground of power lies in the lives of the people.

How can we apply it today?

When we hand something over, we pass on techniques and tricks. What Yao handed over was a single attitude: do not lean to one side; hold to the middle. The moment balance is lost between firmness and leniency, growth and distribution, speed and stability, an organization or a nation tilts. The second warning is even more practical: when the members fall into want, the leader’s position ends too. When employees are exhausted and customers leave, no strategy can help. Anyone holding authority should ask two questions daily. Am I keeping my balance? And are the people in my charge in want?

Questions to reflect on

  • ·Which way are you leaning right now?
  • ·How well do you know the circumstances of the people in your charge?
  • ·If you handed your position to someone, what one thing would you want to say?
