What does this passage mean?

This passage from Xue Er resembles the statement about remaining unresentful when others fail to recognize us, but its emphasis differs. The earlier passage addresses our inward response to neglect; this one redirects the object of concern. Whether another person understands me lies outside my control, but making the effort to understand that person lies within it. Confucius asks us to turn the energy of worry in a productive direction.

How can we apply it today?

Everyone feels the frustration of not being recognized. Yet it is more productive to understand others first than to wait for them to understand us. Understanding another person improves communication, and improved communication often brings recognition naturally. Instead of asking, “Why do they not understand me?” begin by asking, “Do I truly understand them?”

Questions to reflect on

  • ·Have you become absorbed in the thought that others do not understand you?
  • ·When have you made a serious effort to understand someone else?
  • ·What changes when you redirect your concern?
