What does this passage mean?

This passage from Zi Zhang was spoken by Confucius’s disciple Zixia. Spare capacity means the attention remaining after one’s immediate duties. If public service leaves such capacity, study; if study leaves it, enter public service. Work and learning complete each other, and neither alone is sufficient.

How can we apply it today?

Employees who stop learning fall behind, while students without practical experience become detached from reality. Real growth arises from a cycle of theory and practice, learning and execution. This is the modern idea of lifelong learning: study while working and apply study to work. If busyness becomes an excuse to stop learning, the work itself will soon stagnate.

Questions to reflect on

  • ·Do you continue learning while working?
  • ·When have you applied something learned to practical work?
  • ·How do you balance work and study?
