What does this passage mean?

In the twenty-first chapter of Zi Han, Confucius speaks of his disciple Yan Yuan after his death: what a loss, for I saw him advance but never saw him stop. Yan Yuan was the disciple Confucius loved most; he never paused in his learning, yet he died at around thirty. In the preceding chapter, Confucius laments that some sprouts never flower and some flowers never bear fruit, and this passage reads with the same feeling. It holds both a teacher’s grief for a disciple who never reached completion and the highest praise for a diligence that never stopped.

How can we apply it today?

When we evaluate someone, we look at results. But what Confucius saw in Yan Yuan was not a result but a direction: a person who kept advancing without stopping. This is a rarer virtue than achievement, because the usual pattern is to settle when things go well and give up when they do not. Did you move forward at all today? Before this question, neither talent nor luck serves as an excuse. If someday those who remember you can say ‘that person never stopped,’ then perhaps that alone is a life sufficiently complete.

Questions to reflect on

  • ·Are you advancing right now, or standing still?
  • ·Have you settled when things went well and given up when they did not?
  • ·What do you hope the people who remember you will say they saw in you?
