What does this passage mean?
In the twenty-third chapter of Yan Yuan, Zigong asks about friendship and Confucius gives this answer. Counsel a friend sincerely and guide them toward the good, but if they will not accept it, stop, and do not bring humiliation on yourself. The term for sincere counsel comes from this passage. When you see a friend’s fault, speaking sincerely is friendship; but pressing the point until the friend is uncomfortable and you yourself are disgraced is not wisdom. The idea matches Ziyou’s remark in Li Ren that advising a friend too often drives them away. The way of friendship is complete only when sincerity and restraint go together.
How can we apply it today?
If you see a friend heading down the wrong road, you should speak. But if you have spoken sincerely once and they will not listen, what comes next is the friend’s responsibility. Keep talking and advice becomes interference, concern becomes control, and finally the relationship itself breaks. Confucius prescribes speaking sincerely once and then stopping. That is not coldness; it is respecting the other person as an independent adult. Adult friendship does not live other people’s choices for them. If you have spoken sincerely, you have done your part. The rest is the other person’s life.
