What does this passage mean?

This passage from the second chapter of Tai Bo teaches that even the four virtues of respectfulness, caution, courage, and straightforwardness turn into faults without ritual propriety. Respectfulness alone wears a person out; caution alone shrinks into timidity; courage alone becomes unruliness; and straightforwardness alone becomes a harshness that corners others. Ritual propriety here is not formal procedure but the standard that lets each virtue find its proper place and degree. No virtue is complete in itself; it becomes a virtue only with propriety as its regulator. Confucius valued the balance of virtues over their quantity.

How can we apply it today?

A strength taken too far becomes a weakness. We all know people whose consideration exhausts them, whose caution prevents any decision, whose drive flattens everyone around them, or whose honesty wounds. They fail not for lack of virtue but for lack of a standard to regulate it. The propriety Confucius describes is, in today’s terms, the sense to read the situation and the other person: when, to whom, and how much. Knowing where your strengths turn toxic is as much a part of maturity as knowing what your strengths are.

Questions to reflect on

  • ·Has one of your strengths ever become a problem by going too far?
  • ·Have you hurt someone through honesty or drive?
  • ·What is the standard that regulates your virtues?
