What does this passage mean?
In the third chapter of Tai Bo, Zengzi, gravely ill, calls his disciples to look at his hands and feet and then recites this verse from the Book of Songs: tremble with caution, as if at the edge of a deep abyss, as if treading on thin ice. Zengzi had lived his whole life with this care so as not to harm the body he received from his parents, and now, facing death, he says he is at last free of that anxiety. The idioms ‘trembling with caution’ and ‘treading on thin ice’ come from here. Today the first suggests timidity, but originally it described the discipline of never relaxing one’s vigilance.
How can we apply it today?
Serious accidents usually happen in the moment of familiarity. On the road we drive every day, in the task we have repeated hundreds of times, in a relationship we have known for years, we let our guard down. Zengzi’s caution came not from fearfulness but from the preciousness of what he had to protect. Those who value their bodies, their credibility, and the people entrusted to them stay careful to the very end. Taking the wheel, signing a contract, or raising a serious matter as if standing on thin ice is how this passage is practiced. Caution is not fear; it is another name for cherishing.
Questions to reflect on
