What does this passage mean?
In the nineteenth chapter of Ba Yi, Duke Ding of Lu asks how a ruler should employ his ministers and how ministers should serve their ruler. Confucius answers that the ruler employs ministers according to ritual propriety, and ministers serve the ruler with loyalty. The order is significant: the ruler’s propriety comes first. A minister’s loyalty is not one-sided submission but a response to the ruler’s observance of propriety. At the time, the three great families of Lu overshadowed the duke, and his question carries that frustration. Confucius held that what sustains the relationship between superior and subordinate is not power but mutual obligation.
How can we apply it today?
This passage applies directly to managers and staff, companies and employees. An organization that demands loyalty without respect produces people who comply only on the surface. When a manager treats team members with propriety, respecting their dignity, evaluating them fairly, and acknowledging their achievements, loyalty follows without being ordered. The same holds between parents and children, teachers and students. Confucius’s insight that the superior should extend propriety first still stands. The quality of a relationship is usually decided by the party with more power.
