What does this passage mean?

The fourteenth chapter of Gongye Chang records the attitude of the disciple Zilu. When he had heard one teaching, he feared hearing another before he had put the first into practice. It was not that he disliked new teachings; he was ashamed to let a new one pile up while the previous one remained unpracticed. Zilu was impetuous and brave and was often scolded by Confucius, but in turning what he learned immediately into action he was foremost among the disciples. The passage reads as a record left by fellow disciples out of respect for this strength of his.

How can we apply it today?

We live the opposite way from Zilu. We buy the next book before finishing the last, pay for a new course before digesting the previous one, and pile up saved articles while practicing none of them. Learning has become consumption. Zilu’s fear restores the proper order: hear one thing, try it, make it part of yourself, and only then move on. It is not the quantity of knowledge but the quantity of practice that changes a person. Those who feel the weight of what they have not yet practiced, more than the thrill of chasing new information, are the ones who actually grow.

Questions to reflect on

  • ·How much have you learned and stored away without practicing?
  • ·Which draws you more, gaining new knowledge or acting on what you already know?
  • ·What is one teaching you could put into practice right now?
